Scripture References

Isaiah 35

John 5:1-15

Isaiah 53

Historical Context

John 5

  1. At certain times of the year, the Angel of the Lord would stir the water.

  2. Bethesda was a pool near the sheep gate

  3. The name of the pool is said to be derived from the Hebrew and/or Aramaic language. Beth hesda (בית חסד/חסדא), means either house of mercy or house of grace.

  4. It was believed that the Sheep Gate was where the Messiah would enter Jerusalem. (Isaiah 53:7)

Spiritual Context

  1. When the lame man saw Jesus, he did not know who he was.

  • Sometimes we are waiting for or waiting on God to do what He did in the past, but in our passion and zeal, we are unable to recognize the new thing He wants to do or is doing.

  • God called the pool the "house of Grace/Mercy" and sent an angel to stir the waters and those that made it in first received their healing. God fixes that by sending Jesus to the manifest mercy and grace of God.

  • Often times we think we missed out on something because we didn't move when the time was right, but when we are in Christ he makes all things new.

2. The Lame man was in his existing state for 30 years.

  • God's response to your need has already been provided.

  • Jesus started his ministry at 30, the man had been lame for 30 years.

  • God knew the need of the lame man before the man was ever lame.

3. The healing was twofold.

  • Physical - Take up your bed and walk

  • Spiritual - Go and sin no more
